Madonna is the great global star, an artist who has jumped from decade to decade reinventing herself, thus defying the passage of time and avoiding being eclipsed by artists who have come after her. 

From the Madonna of 1982, when she recorded her first songs, to that of 2022, when she released  Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones  , 40 years have passed and she’s always been on top, never relinquishing the throne of her pop kingdom. She is a woman who has made herself, who became strong with each blow that life gave her.

Survived family dramas

She was born on August 16, 1958 in Michigan, the third of six children.  Her parents named her Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, a nod to her mother, whose name was Madonna. Her mother died of cancer when she was five years old, something that marked her life, and she never accepted that her father remarried. Her relationship with her father went through difficult times and also with her brother Christopher of hers, who did not speak very highly of her in the autobiographical book he wrote.Madonna has played with her image for decades.

He arrived in New York in the late 1970s with $35 in his pocket. His first jobs were in musical projects like Breakfast Club and Emmy, where he met Patrick Hernández, who was behind the song “Born to be Alive”. 

She has a past that he does not hide

Long before she was famous,  Madonna posed nude for photographers starting their careers.  The photos were saved and years later, with the singer at the top, they were sold for a fortune to magazines like Playboy and Penthouse. Curiously, something similar happened to Marilyn Monroe, one of Madonna’s great references. In the 80s, Madonna’s fame was already so great that she stayed in hotels under a false name: Lulu Smith. Madonna has a passion for lingerie fashion.

Madonna burst onto the music scene like a tornado, sweeping through. Her songs were very catchy, her music videos seduced a rebellious generation and  her looks were instantly copied by the most rebellious young women on the entire planet. They all wanted to dress like Madonna, even if they had to ransack their mothers’ and grandmothers’ lingerie drawers to do so. Even Macy’s stores had a section dedicated to Madonna! What few know is that 2 of her most famous looks are due to a Spaniard: Fernando Sánchez.

Madonna has freely lived her love and sexuality. She has been married twice, first to actor  Sean Penn , and years later to director  Guy Ritchie.  She has had other partners, from Carlos León to Ahlamalik Williams, with romances with stars like Warren Beaty, Lenny Kravitz, Tony Ward and Jean-Michel Basquiat.  She has 6 children : 2 biological (Lola is the daughter of Carlos León and Rocco is the son of Guy Ritchie) and another four adopted in Malawi: David Banda Mwale, Mercy James, the twins Stelle and Estere.  Madonna has been on the cover of major magazines.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the blonde ambition has managed to sell more than 335 million albums, making her the best-selling female music artist in history. Its  Sticky & Sweet (held between 2008 and 2009) grossed $408 million and is the highest-grossing tour by a woman in history.

After her wedding to Guy Ritchie, Madonna changed her lifestyle and embraced the British style, something that was even noticeable in the way she dressed. The controversy has followed Madonna since she started in music, especially with videos like the one for “Like a Prayer”, that raised blisters in the Catholic Church, and that of “Justify my love”, with images of relationships between men and scenes of sadomasochism. But there is more. When she took her Blond Ambition Tour to Toronto, the police threatened to arrest her if she faked masturbating when she sang “Like a virgin” and in Rome, the Vatican managed to get the concert cancelled; the book Sex, which scandalized the most puritanical.

When it was announced that Madonna would be Evita in Alan Parker’s musical, anger broke out among the defenders of Eva Perón. The streets of Buenos Aires were filled with graffiti such as “Long live Evita. Out with Madonna ”and the filming began with the whole country against it, but Madonna wanted that role to show that she was an actress.Madonna returns to the fashion arena with a new job.

Madonna has collaborated with artists like Lenny Kravitz and Prince, something few have achieved. And she has another achievement: that ABBA allows her to use one of her songs, something that nobody has achieved.  Let’s go in parts. Legend has it that Lenny Kravitz gave Madonna the song “Justify my Love”, one of the artist’s greatest hits, but the singer went so far as to say that he doesn’t know how but someone stole it from him in a bar. With Prince he had a most authentic professional relationship. 

Madonna does not give up the throne of the kingdom of pop.
