From the most beautiful corners of the historic center, the best gastronomic options in the city and other plans that I loved in the surroundings of Vitoria. Will you come with me to find out?
1. Plaza of the White Virgin
The Plaza de la Virgen Blanca is my favorite. In fact, I dare to say that it is the most beautiful square in Vitoria . It is a 17th century square that is the nerve center. Here we find several of the most attractive and important buildings in Vitoria and other corners that attract a lot of attention.
In this square are the letronas of Vitoria . What would a Spanish city be without its letronas? There is no doubt that this new fashion has been going strong in all the cities and towns of Spain. It is a tourist attraction in which you cannot refuse a photo. Do not you believe it?
Just behind the green letronas of Vitoria is the Monument to the Battle of Vitoria . But if there is something that characterizes this square, it is that the txupinazo takes place here . On August 4, the starting signal for the Virgen Blanca festivities is given in this square , one of the best festivities in the Basque Country.
Celedón comes down here every year on the day of the txupinazo with his umbrella and I am speaking literally. If you don’t believe me, I invite you to look for a YouTube video of the holy festival that takes place in this square. It’s gross! The beautiful Plaza de la Virgen Blanca in Vitoria.
2. Church of San Miguel
Right at the top of the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca is the Church of San Miguel . It is a 14th century church and in it is the chapel of the Virgen Blanca, patron saint of the city. From the balcony of this church you have a fabulous view of the Plaza de la Virgen and right next to it is the sculpture of Celedón.
3. Spanish Steps
The Plaza de España is the Plaza Mayor of Vitoria. It is in the neoclassical style of the 18th century , it is surrounded by arcades and elegant buildings and has the shape of a perfect square. Here is the Vitoria Town Hall , several cafeterias and the Vitoria Tourist Office .
4. Cathedral of Santa Maria
The Cathedral of Santa MarÃa is popularly known as the Old Cathedral . The church is Gothic from the 14th century and was declared a World Heritage Site within the context of the Camino de Santiago. They say that Ken Follet was inspired by this cathedral to write the second part of Pilates de la Tierra and I don’t doubt it for a second.
One of the things that most characterize this church is that it is eternally under construction. It had certain architectural problems and the same architects who at the time studied the Tower of Pisa came to analyze it. Although it is still under construction, that does not mean that it is not possible to visit the inside. Of course, I warn you that the visit is guided and must be carried out with a safety helmet. Here you have all the information on schedules and prices to organize a visit to the Cathedral of Santa MarÃa .Facade of the Old Cathedral of Vitoria.
5. The Gate
If there is a place that surprised me in the center of Vitoria, it is this building that seems to have been taken directly from a medieval movie. It is located in the Plaza de la BurullerÃa and this tower-building was formerly a merchants’ inn . Today the building houses one of the most famous restaurants in the city, the El Portalón restaurant . Undoubtedly, a curious and interesting place with a lot of history.
